KARACHI: A student died and seven others were injured when unknown persons riding on four motorcycles opened fire on them at a roadside hotel opposite the Federal Urdu University in Gulshan-i-Iqbal.
Police said that at the time of the incident several members of th e Pukhtoon Students Federation were sitting at the hotel when the unidentified culprits sprayed them with bullets.
The firing caused panic and people ran for shelter, according to the police. The six assailants managed to escape from the scene after opening fire.
As a result of the firing, eight students sustained bullet injuries and were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and Liaquat National Hospital.
One of the injured students, Asmatullah, 25, succumbed to his wounds during treatment at the JPMC. Of the other five injured men brought to the JPMC, two were stated to be in serious condition, hospital sources said.
Following the incident, dozens of members of the PkSF reached the hospital and raised slogans against the government for its failure to protect people.
Almost all the shops located at the main University Road were closed down by shopkeepers, who feared more violence in the area.
Later in the day, the Pukhtoon Students Federation held a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, where office-bearers of the student organisation informed those present that the incident had occurred at a hotel after a PSF provincial executive committee meeting at the Federal Urdu University campus.
Several members of the student organisation were sitting at the hotel when the attack was carried out, they said, adding that Tuesday’s attack was a continuation of Monday’s killings in Al Falah and an earlier incident in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, where ANP workers and supporters were targeted.
Till the filing of this report, an FIR pertaining to the incident was yet to be registered at the Aziz Bhatti police station.
