PANAJI – AN INDIAN man who has admitted killing five women in the resort state of Goa has confessed to two more murders, police said Friday.
Mahanand Naik, 40, was first arrested last month on suspicion of rape and blackmail, but under questioning went on to admit five murders dating back to 1994.
His latest confession relates to the deaths of two local women aged 31 and 28 in the former Portuguese colony in 2003 and 2005.
All of the victims were strangled with a light dupatta scarf worn by many Indian women, leading him to be dubbed ‘the Dupatta Killer’ by local media.
Detectives are now re-examining 18 unsolved cases of women who went missing in and around the town of Ponda, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the state capital Panaji, over the last 15 years.
Naik, a former auto-rickshaw driver, is said to have befriended his victims with promises of marriage.
They were lured to isolated rural areas on the pretext of meeting his parents, then robbed of the gold jewellery he told them to wear and killed. — AFP
