Pakistan laments Suu Kyi’s trial

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Tuesday lamented the trial of Myanmar pro-democracy leader and Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and called for her release.Aung San Suu Kyi, 63, is on trial at the Insein prison outside Yangon, facing up to another five years’ detention on charges of harbouring an American man who swam to her home.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi described the trial as “unfortunate” and urged the Myanmar government to consider reviewing its decision.

Suu Kyi has spent 13 of the last 19 years in jail or under house arrest at the hands of Myanmar’s generals, most of it at her lakeside house in Yangon. “Her early release would serve the fundamental interests of Myanmar with which Pakistan enjoyed close cooperative relations,” said Qureshi.
