Three killed, buses torched in Karachi violence

KARACHI: At least three persons lost their lives and eight vehicles were torched in separate incidents in Karachi since late night, whereas shopping centres and area shops are completely closed in Gulistan-e-Johar, some parts of Gushan-e-Iqbal areas.

Police and Rangers are on high alert in the city, consequent to eruption of violence in certain parts of the metropolis on Friday night, according to a DawnNews report.

Traffic flow has been significantly low since Saturday morning and despite visible presence of rangers shopkeepers in major shopping areas expressed their reluctance to open their businesses.

Students appearing in board examination were extremely confused as no decision was announced regarding papers scheduled for the day.

Police authorities have claimed to have arrested four for resorting to firing and putting on fire public vehicles last night. According to details available from police and fire brigade sources said that a woman and a girl succumbed to burn injuries when unknown persons set fire to a mini-bus no. JE-0919 opposite the City Zoo, in Garden area. Their charred bodies were removed by the staff of fire brigade and sent to Civil Hospital, the sources further said.

Area police denied information of the incident but said mini-bus JE-0919 of route P-1 was set on fire by unknown persons who escaped. The burnt vehicle has been towed to Garden police station along with its driver, Waris.

In Liaquatabad No. 4, Sharifabad police area unknown persons shot and killed Majid alias Kaku, who was going in his Alto car ARH-270, near Welcome Bakery along with a relative. His body has been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for procedural formalities, police said.

At Nishtar Road a mini-bus JE-1280 of route No. W-1 was set on fire by unknown persons in Eidgah police area, the area police said.

A coach was set on fire by unknown persons on road leading to Keamari Bridge from Tower, Kharadar police said adding the vehicle number or other details were being ascertained.

In Gulistan-e-Jauhar block-16 one person was injured by firing of unknown assailants and was shifted to hospital for treatment, police said.

A bus of route 11-A was also set on fire near Met Office, Gulistan- e-Jauhar, the area police said adding it appears a precursor of strike call given by a nationalist group.
