5 men caught for attack

BAGHDAD – FIVE Americans working for a security contractor have been arrested in Baghdad over an attack in which another US national was killed, an Iraq government spokesman said on Sunday.

‘Five US security contractors were arrested on Friday during a joint Iraqi-US operation in the Green Zone as part of an investigation into the death of another American,’ Ali Al-Dabbagh told AFP.

A US embassy confirmed that five men had been arrested, saying they were neither diplomats nor military personnel, but that no formal charges had been pressed against them.

He gave no details on why the five had been arrested, and declined to say if they were security contractors.

CNN reported on its website that five men had been detained over the killing of 60-year-old James Kitterman, who was found stabbed to death in a car in the capital’s high-security Green Zone on May 22.

Citing an Iraqi official it did not name, the American broadcaster said once the suspects have been charged and referred to trial, the case will be sent to the Central Criminal Court in Baghdad.

If such a step were taken, it would be the first time American citizens have faced trial in Iraq since jurisdiction was returned to Baghdad by the United States under an accord signed last November, the report added.

‘For the moment, the Americans are interrogating them,’ Mr Al-Dabbagh said, adding that if there was a case against them, the suspects would be transferred to Iraqi justice to face trial.

The role of private security guards in Iraq came under intense scrutiny over a deadly shooting in Baghdad in 2007 involving employees of the US company Blackwater.
