Former MNA among four killed in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: At least four persons including a former MNA, Fazal Manan Kudakhel, were killed and two others injured by unidentified armed men in two separate incidents at Faqirabad and Kohat Road on Monday night.

It was learnt that the former MNA, hailing from Mohmand Agency, was attacked by unidentified persons at Dalazak Road on the jurisdiction of Faqirabad police station. He lived in Faqirabad area.

The son of the deceased told Dawn that they had no enmity with anyone. The local police said that they had sketchy information about the occurrence and had yet to acquire details. The funeral of the former MNA will be held at Baizai Kudakhel area of Mohmand Agency on Tuesday.

Late Fazal Manan was elected as MNA in 1985 from Mohmand Agency during the non-party general elections.

In the other incident three persons were killed when unidentified persons opened firing at their vehicle.

A police official said they had no details about the incident. “We just came to know that as a result of firing near Ghazi Abad three persons were killed,” he added. He said it might be a failed attempt of kidnapping.

The official quoting reports said that five persons, believed to be residents of Bannu, were on their way to Darra Adamkhel when armed men riding two Corolla motorcars signalled them to stop and opened firing on them when they sped away.

The two injured persons were also stated to be in critical condition. The names of the victims could not be ascertained.

The residents of Matani and Adezai told Dawn that they heard firing on Kohat Road but couldn’t get it confirmed as to what had happened.

Suspects held

Several suspected persons were arrested here on Monday after the killing of a policeman in bomb blast at Akhund Baba Road, sources said.

A policeman said that a number of suspected persons had been arrested and efforts were being made to get any clue to the mastermind of the blast.

The official said that search operation on the outskirts of Peshawar was also on the cards as criminals were gradually intensifying their activities by targeting security personnel in the areas.

SSP Qazi Jamilur Rehman, when contacted, told Dawn that police had already beefed up security but he avoided commenting on the plan about launching any operation in the suburban areas of Peshawar.

Meanwhile, a police spokesman said that they arrested 13 proclaimed offenders in the limits of various police stations on Monday.

The accused, he said, were wanted by police in cases pertaining to murder and attempt to murders. He said that police had also recovered weapons and narcotics from their possession.

He said some of the proclaimed offenders were identified as Ali, Adnan, Dawood Shah, Ihtishamul Haq, Aslam, Rahim Sher, Naeem, Ameen Jan and Said Ahmed.

He said 27 pistols, four Kalashnikovs, two rifles, eight short guns and 19 kilogram hashish were recovered from their possession.

One of the accused Naeem, the spokesman said, was wanted in policemen murder case at Khazana, Charsadda Road.

Funeral

The funeral prayers of police driver Amir Nawaz, who was killed in the bomb blast, were offered at Malik Saad Khan Shaheed Police Lines.

CCPO Safwath Ghayyur, SSP Abdul Ghafoor Afridi, SSP Qazi Jamilur Rehman and SPs of all circles attended the funeral.

Blast condemned

Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has strongly condemned the remote control bomb blast on police mobile van and issued directives for the probe into the incident.

The CM expressed deep sorrow over the death of police personnel. The chief minister said that the militants have accelerate their activities in urban areas in order to pressurise the government, however, such cowardly acts would never affect the resolve and spirit of the government and personnel of law enforcement agencies against terrorism.
