PESHAWAR: A minister in the NWFP provincial government was wounded in an attack on Thursday, hospital officials and police said.
Mian Nisar Kakakhel, the provincial minister for jails was attacked in the Darra Adam Khel region of the province, in an attack no one has claimed credit for yet. ‘He received bullets in his chest and we are operating on him to save him,’ Mukhtar Ahmed, a doctor at the main government hospital in the city of Peshawar told Reuters.
Police official Abdul Ghafoor Afridi told AFP that ‘two guards and one attacker were killed in an exchange of fire’ as the minister was travelling to Peshawar. The minister is being treated at Peshawar’s main hospital, where according to hospital official Mohammad Rehan the minister is in the operating theater after receieving two gunshot wounds. Government officials add that Kakakhel’s injuries are not life-threatening.
Dawn News adds that unidentified men opened fire on the minister’s vehicle as it was traveling through the area, and that two guards were also injured.
