Thirty-eight terrorists held in Malakand

ISLAMABAD: Security forces claimed on Monday to have arrested 38 terrorists in Swat and other areas of Malakand division.

abbas-608 According to an ISPR press release on the Rahe Raast operation, 26 suspects were arrested in Shingarai, Sabgar Shah and Tiligram areas. Six terrorists surrendered in Fatehpur.

Troops captured six militants in Ghuzkas and Lalkhu near Shalkho Sar and Muslim Baig Sar near Derai.

A jirga handed over three terrorists to security forces in Kalam while three militants were arrested in Watakai Chowk, Shahdarra and Malukabad.

Military spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas told Dawn that the number of local and foreign terrorists arrested during the operation so far exceeded 900.

He said that 330 officers and jawans of Pakistan army laid down their lives in Swat and Malakand since the operation was launched on April 26. About 960 have been injured.

He said the overall security situation in the region was under control and the terrorists were on the run and trying to escape to suburbs and far-flung areas.

He said that although there was no possibility of terrorists re-grouping in the region, isolated incidents of terrorism could not be ruled out.
