It’s not often that you get to see a designer host her show wholly solely with no sponsors involved, whatsoever. It takes guts and lots of moolah to do so, and Zainab Sajid seems to have both.
Her recent debut show at a local hotel was evidence of the same. The evening had been whipped up by Frieha Altaf, who had once again managed an immaculate and chic presentation.
A few chess pawns were strategically placed on the ramp, as props, against a backdrop of cupid and other romantic characters, of an era bygone, etched on frames that seemed to hold a dialogue with the audience. Coming back to Zainab Sajid, the girl has previously showed twice but this was her first grand solo and so she did not work on any theme. “I had wanted to show all my creations to the audience and so I had presented my prêt, formals and bridals,” she explains. Colour is the hallmark of this designer. “I love to play with colours as you witnessed at the show.” Which we sure did; pink, red, blue, gold, black and not just solid colours but brilliant colour combos as well for the gutsy bride.
“When I work on my bridals I do not opt for monotone joras. I like offbeat colour combos and try to convince my clients of trying the same.” One got to see pink and maroon, red and green, pearl pink and green colour combos tastefully sculpted to form elegant bridal attire.
For the formals, Zainab had focused on incorporating lots of bling coupled with a classy silhouette. While for the prêt she had preferred the playful approach; fusion ensembles in a kaleidoscope of colours made for a delightful presentation.
Zainab too has adhered by the present trends and had exhibited flowy designs with lots of volume and dropped hemlines.
It was a show of contemporary classicism. While most of the pieces sent down the runway were breathtaking, there were some that could have been skipped like the red overalls and the crocheted double layered number. But what’s a few glitches, anyway!
