The controversial law, which was promulgated by the former military ruler, General (retired) Pervez Musharraf, was used to withdraw corruption and criminal cases against many influential people in the country.

NRO beneficiaries included prominent politicians, bureaucrats and party workers, mostly from the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and its ally, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

The critics of the law maintain that it is discriminatory and contrary to the fundamental rights of the citizens.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued an official statement, saying that the chief justice of Pakistan had decided to constitute a larger bench of judges which would hear the petitions against the NRO.

The official statement also said that notices had also been issued to some prisoners and convicts who had approached the apex court to get the same benefits that were given to the politicians under the controversial law.

The Attorney General for Pakistan, Shah Khawar said that the country’s president enjoys complete constitutional immunity against any legal proceedings, and that the corruption cases against him, which were withdrawn, cannot be reopened.

But senior lawyer Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, who has questioned the constitutionality of the NRO, maintains that the presidential immunity is not unqualified.
